The Future of the Office – What Will Post-Pandemic Work Look Like?

At the start of the pandemic during the spring of 2020, we were forced to adapt remote working habits with a very short notice. Although remote and flexible work were already familiar to some of us, one could say that the pandemic really brought these concepts to public’s attention in just a matter of months in 2020.

After being introduced to these new working conditions, we now certainly know working from home does not suit everyone; some homes may not have suitable space for an office use, or it is simply highly difficult to concentrate and be productive in one’s home environment. If the whole family is stuck indoors, like during lockdowns we experienced during the pandemic, working conditions at home may be nearly catastrophic. On the other hand, for some the shift towards flexible and remote working has been a long-awaited triumph.

This makes us wonder what the future of work will look like, in the (hopefully near) future when we can move and live more freely.

The need for a space to work in outside home is still there, as the collective space for organisations offers social interactions and chances to collaborate, workshop and mentor one another. Also, in many cases office space can be found a more productive environment than the comfort of your home, where the distractions are lurking. Despite all of this, the offices are usually centrally located, and commuting may take our precious time that could be spent working or being with our families. And sometimes we might just need some space from our office environment, for a chance to clear our heads and regain perspective.

The future of office work has been a hot topic this fall and the feelings of office workers have been studied and speculated globally. According to a report by Cushman & Wakefield, office workers are slowly leaning towards flexible work, where they can have the choice of either going to the office or choose to work from anywhere at times. Many surveys and reports support this finding: for instance, BBC reported that 72% out of 4,700 knowledge workers want a hybrid working model in the future, a mixture combined of remote and office work. Meanwhile, CBRE reports 82% of companies utilising office spaces think flexibility is a desired feature in their future leasing interests. The global discussion around flexible and dynamic workplace has been speeding Spacent’s development as well.
